musing thirty-five

Right, I was talking with a friend the other day who shall remain nameless because he's recently fled to Italy... well not fled, he lives there with his dad, and we got on to talking about Doctor Who. Oh, just off topic, really excited about the new Torchwood series. You can see clips on Freema Agyeman's website (Best companion so far!) And we were trying to work out why the Doctor is so obssessed with taking on young girls as his companions. What's the deal? At first my friend sai he was a perv but then I said maybe it has something to do with his granddaughter. We talked it out and came up with The Susan Foreman Complex, which is basically the idea that because the Doctor feels the need to protect someone he takes on the companions who make up for his granddaughter not being there.

Firstly, the Doctor's only known family was his granddaughter Susan Foreman who he had been travelling with for a long time in exile. Susan being only a little girl really was always in need of saving and was often kidnapped to get the Doctor to do what the enemy wanted. She left him to stay on Earth, quite unwillingly, as the Doctor had to lock her out of the TARDIS to stop her from coming back. He began to fear that as long as Susan was with him she wouldn't have a life of her own. So he told her stay on Earth and that he would one day return for her. Till this day he never has and with the Time War we can assume that as far as the Doctor knows Susan died in the Time War with the other Time Lords.

The Doctor's second companion after Susan was a girl called Vicki who he adopted as his granddaughter. After she left, there were others, time after time, there was new companion to replace his adopted granddaughters. The trend has never ended. Basically, the Doctor needs someone to protect because without Susan he would have been very lonely. The reason they are so young is because Susan was very young, still a child really, and needed him. The Doctor likes to show off and be needed by his companions the way Susan needed him. I suppose the reason he felt a little overwhelmed by Martha is because she didn't always need him to protect her as she could do a lot of things by herself. His love of humans comes from Susan too. Prior to meeting Ian and Barbara he hated humans or at least disliked them and Earth. He only began to like them and protect them once Susan left to live with humans. He is still protecting the thing the person he loved most held dear.

If you could travel back in time to spend a day with someone, who would it be and why?

View other answers

Well, I wasn't sure what to say about today so I thought I'd take one of the writer's block questions on LiveJournal and answer the question of if I could go back in time, who would I spend the day with and why. I love history. I'll go anywhere... if anything I'd like to go forwards in time and say hello to me, all grown-up. But I'll get to that later.

There are many places I'd like to go but I suppose the main place I'd like to go to at the moment is Ancient Rome, around the time of the late republic or the early empire. I'd rather like to meet the assasins of Julius Caesar from 44 BC for no reason other than seeing what they were like, what they looked like and if the stories about them were true. I'd made notes of the things I saw and help put them into my stories which I hope to get published one day. If you ask me, there nothing better than making notes about what you see and then adding it into your stories.

My story is about Julia Augusti though, so I suppose the best times to travel to are between 39 BC and AD 14 in Ancient Rome and Italy as that is the time she lived in. I'd just love to meet her and see what she was like because I can't believe what Augustus said about her was true. He had so many reasons to lie and even the historians didn't really know, you can tell by the way they write things. History was written how Augustus wanted to put it and his own history of his wonders just speaks out about how big headed he was. He took credit for many of the victories and triumphs which Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was the hero of - since Agrippa was dead so it was easier to rip him off I suppose. It's sad that Augustus' rubbish lives but nothing non-bias does.

Yes, I'd love to meet Julia Augusti... and Agrippa! I wouldn't mind telling Augustus what I think of him as a person too. I'm worried though, if I ever do go back and find him he might turn out to be a very nice guy.

Another place I wouldn't mind going is to my parents' childhoods - I couldn't say hello to them, of course, but it would be nice to live in the world that they lived in which seemed so much simpler without all of the computers and games and such. Sometimes I wonder what my parents would have done if they saw me from the future or they saw themselves. Heh, I'd probably start disappearing like the guy in Back to the Future because no way would they want the life they have now. Selfish but understandable. That could by a reason to stop me going forwards in time to my adulthood because I might see myself, realise what a pig I've made of my life and not go there.

That's the point where we get into the awful Doctor Who world where you screw up the timeline, creating an alternate reality. That said, if time is not linear but circular then how can we change the past or the future even if we had a time machine and could go to these many places and see these many things. Human natures begs us to change what history did wrong, but is there something in the people then that will say "He's wrong, we'll do it my way" and history just goes the way it did? Is it possible that you can't avoid what happens to you? That said, I think I'd rather go to Ancient Rome - I can't really screw with my life there. But then I could, couldn't I? Again, would I make an action that would change the course of history forever, tell them something which might change everything so I don't exist. Time to fade!

Hopefully time is circular... that way there is nothing I could say or do to change it no matter how much I want to. Who knows what the outcome will be if we could change history, or future history. For if I could change history, I would go back and warn my mother of her health problems, her strokes and her near death moment where her kidney, liver and heart nearly failed. I'd go back and warn my grandmother about the cancer which is killing her now.

That, for me, would be worth the risk.

doctor who fic: getting out
Title: Getting Out
Pairing: Hints of Doctor/Martha
Genre: General/Romance
Rating: PG
Something Martha says to the Doctor really does get to him...

- - - - - - - - - - -

Something Martha Jones said, one of the last things she said, touched the Doctor in a way that no other companion he had ever had done. When she came bursting back into the TARDIS, jabbering on about Vicki and Shawn—whoever they were; the Doctor thought that this was just her trying to kill extra time and gain a couple more minutes before she had to leave-leave. He also couldn't help thinking “Oh! I knew a Vicki once!”

But he could relate to her—she said: “She [Vicki] loved him [Shawn]. She completely adored him; spent all day long talking about him…”

“Is this… going anywhere?” questioned the Doctor.

“Yes!” said Martha desperately.

It was all the Doctor could to just fold his arms, stand up straight and listen. He had plenty of stupid, talkative companions. Even though Martha had proved herself to be one of the first companions he had with independence, intellect, and strength rolled into one very small human, he was sure that even the amazing Martha Jones, world saviour and heroine could have a rant.

But she wasn’t ranting; she was explaining in a very human why she couldn’t go with him.

“He never looked at her twice…" she finally said, still smiling. "I mean, he liked her but that was it. And she wasted years pining over him because while he was there she never looked at anyone else…”

So this was Martha’s real reason for leaving—not that the parent thing wasn’t true—but she wanted to save herself. For a brief moment the Doctor felt sorry for her, almost guilty. She wasn't the first companion to express affection for him. His companions were like pet dogs. Like a dog loves its master the companions love their Doctor. And that would have been the end of the Doctor's thoughts - but then Martha said something that made him think:

“And I said to her” she explained “I always said to her time and time again: get out!

And all of a sudden, the Doctor saw himself in the story of Martha had told. The only difference was that it was the other way around. He was pining after someone. He was living in the past. He was longing for something that would never come. He was slowing down his life because of it.

He wasn't pining for Rose; nor Peri, Romana, Sarah-Jane, or Jo. In fact, he wasn't pining for any of his companions. To him his companions were to fill a completely different gap, need in his life, one that he couldn’t bear to keep empty. That was the lack on one person: his granddaughter, Susan.

His desire to have a companion travelling with him came from his wish to have someone to look after and look up to him. It came from his yearning for Susan to walk around the corner and rejoin him. But she never did. It was never her who came around the corner. It was Rose. It was Grace. It was all of them: Ace, Mel, Peri, Romana, Leela, Sarah-Jane, Jo, Liz, Victoria, Zoe, Polly, Dodo, and Vicki… all of them… even the boys he loved as grandsons.

No, he pined over someone he lost many, many, many years ago; centuries ago, before the Time War, before he even left Gallifrey… back when he was just a run of the mill troublesome Time Lord with crazy ideas. Back in the days when he was a family man, when he had children, (Before Susan was born obviously), and before most things happened in his life.

In fact, the loss of this person was the first of his troubles. his partner and his wife and his mate… whatever you wanted to call it. He had first met her at home on Gallifrey and loved her on sight. And he had really, deeply loved her; completely adored her and spent all day talking about her. She loved him too—but she died young, quite unexpectedly, despite being a Time Lady.

After she died, she wasn’t there to love him anymore but he didn’t care, because he still loved her and didn’t look at any other female creature twice. None of the Time Ladies and certainly not the humans. I mean he liked them, it took time but he grew to like humans very much... but have you ever been licked all over your face by a dog?

Yes, he liked them but that was it.

And that was what touched him in that special way in Martha’s words—how she had told her friend, who had wasted years of her life, she had told her time and time again: get out!

The Doctor wondered if someone had told him to get out he would have; he doubted it but it might have pushed him down the right path. After all he has waste centuries pining over his lost partner because even after she was gone he didn’t look at anyone else.

Martha had touched it with a needle; she had touched the routes of his soul. And he wondered, as she finally walked off, what category she would be put into when it came to companions. She was far too intelligent to be a pet, and she had saved his life too many times to be a granddaughter—now that he thought about it, the Doctor realised she had probably saved him more times then he had her!

Yes, she’d get a whole new section. Just for her—"partner-in-crime", maybe.

It was too bad! It had been centuries and the Doctor didn’t know if he wanted to move on from the memory of his dear departed spouse. The loss of his family was enough to stop him moving on now. Stop him from settling down and having more kids. He did that when he was meant to. The Doctor could tell that Martha understood that better then any of his companions did.

They were merely infatuated; Martha was truly in love with him, would do anything for him, and saved the world for him. The tragic thing was that had someone told him before to ‘get out’ he might have considered moving on with someone like her, even if she was a human.

After all, she was a very attractive woman, probably.

I found out a couple of days ago that my grandmother was lying about how bad her condition is. She isn't dying, exactly, but she is old and very ill from the tumour in her stomach. I've been trying to cheer myself up with Doctor Who music videos... most of them are about the Doctor and the Master, I must confess. I just feel so down at the moment and I keep forgetting to update my blog. It does feel a lot better talking to a blog about these things. Other than my grandmother's health I have very little to say. I thought I'd share this with you which I found o
